Wednessday! Remember this one? Last year we won the European championship cosplay with these suits. A little background. This was our first time taking on anything of this detail and scale and especially hard since- sure that thing looks like armor in the movie but it moves like a bodysuit cause lucky lucky Hollywood had CGI. We have tweaked them over time to improve them but they are still kind off a hassle to transport and wear. We had no idea where to start, no idea with what materials, never learned any info on how, but were like you know, fuck it lol. Also- no money to get this going lol. Stubborn as we are we weren’t like “let me study up on method and stuff”- we went the other way and went ‘oh sure two suits in two weeks comin’ up!’ No time to waste! That without a fitting, without any moving images of the movie out( only bts) and living 2 countries apart. Cause we like always wanted to be the first duo lol (read work x2) Oh we need facial hair and wigs too? Oh sure lemme make that too lol. Including finishing two suits for under 50 check.handpaint everything travelling for hours after hours of face altering makeup checkgetting dressed outside the con- naked in the snow, check Looking back at it it was crazy. But we are very happy with how it turned out. We always were told and saw, to win a contest, you gotta be silly or sexy, even if the characters don’t call for it. Again- we went ‘my way or the highway’ and passed on that. There were all kinds of technical issues but we made it through our suitably king of the sea kinda cocky act and won! WTH just happened? We did nothing by the book and everything that could have worked against us, did. But it turned out great in the end. Moral of the story- fuck rules and conventions, you can dream it you can be it. after this we made multiple more Aquaman and Mera suits, constantly trying to improve look, fit and comfort. In the end, No pain No gain! So I’ve gotten a few DMs asking about the detail work in my Mera cosplay – particularly those tricky bevel cuts! First off, in my humble opinion, bevel cuts (similar to foam scales) were invented by Satan to make cosplayers cry. ??? * Anywhoo, the best place to start if you’re getting into the nitty gritty of foam work is to check out @chinbeard (aka Punished Props) and @evilted_channel videos! They’re SO helpful and easy to follow. As for me, the 3 pieces of advice that I would give would be: 1. Always use a sharp blade. 2. Use a steel/metal ruler (whenever possible) to keep your hands steady when making cuts. A metal ruler really is a game changer. 3. I'd recommend good quality foam - @tntcosplaysupply in particular - to me, their foam is SO much easier to work with. It was hard expirience for me and my team. The shooting took place in extremely cold conditions of Siberia. (-20-25 degrees) But we did it! I express great respect to Jason Momoa.
